Visual Marketing

How the right videos and images can work wonders for your business

December 6, 2017

“A picture paints a thousand words”, so the age-old saying tells us.  Countless studies show how effective image and video media can be in marketing, and it’s never been more accessible and fun to create and share incredible snaps and videos with your audience. Sites such as Instagram and YouTube were built on the basis of visual media, and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are increasingly seeing more users sharing pictures and video content.

One of the most fundamental, important, and often-overlooked principles of marketing is to develop an emotional attachment between your company and your customers. Once a customer has felt at least some level of emotional feeling towards your brand and your products or services, they will be much more likely to purchase from you rather than a competitor. Using pictures and videos can help you tremendously when trying to build that emotional attachment.

I’d say that using visual marketing can be the most fun of all marketing strategies! Sometimes it’s easy for business owners to overcomplicate things unnecessarily, and there’s really no need to do that here (note that this doesn’t mean it’s okay to post poor quality and irrelevant images as this can cause more harm than good). As long as you have a good understanding of your customers and audience, and I know you do!, you should be able to develop a reasonable idea of which images you should post.

There are many pieces of interesting kit and software you can use to take and edit photos or videos, but for most small businesses, a modern smartphone will be more than adequate. There are countless free and affordable apps you can download that allow you edit and transform your videos and images within minutes.

If you decide to try your hand at some visual marketing, it is good practice to start with a realistic and achievable plan you can follow.  Posting one image to each of your social media accounts and your website, and one short video to your website each week is a good idea. From there, you can work out which are generating the most interest from your customers, and which perhaps aren’t getting the shares, comments and likes that you’re hoping for.

Visual marketing must start at your product images. Powerful, quality images of your products captured in adequate lighting is a must for any business. Take a look around the top selling products in any category on Amazon and you’ll find that the product images are always of the highest quality.

As you begin to post images to your social media pages, begin by looking around at other accounts for inspiration. Use your imagination and get out and about with your products and customers and get some pictures and images that your audience will love! Try to take images that will put a smile on your customers’ faces and will have them sharing them with their friends and family. And above all else, make sure you’re having fun!
